About Koinonia Youth
Born from firsthand experience, driven by a vision for change
Our Story
Koinonia Youth was born from the lived experience of our founder, Philip L. Kanneh, who grew up in Liberia witnessing the profound challenges facing young people in underserved communities.
During his school years, Philip saw firsthand how the absence of role models left young people without guidance or direction. After graduation, the challenges only grew—talented young people struggled to find opportunities despite their education.
These experiences planted a seed: a determination to create the support system he wished had existed. That seed grew into Koinonia Youth.
The word "Koinonia" comes from the Greek, meaning fellowship or community. It represents our core belief that transformation happens through connection.
Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Iowa on November 7, 2025, Koinonia Youth now operates in the United States and Liberia.
Our Mission
"To nurture individuals and communities through mentorship, partnership, and fellowship."
We believe that every young person—regardless of background—deserves access to quality education, meaningful guidance, and a supportive community. Through our three-pillar approach, we address the root causes of youth disempowerment.
Our Vision
"To build a vibrant community of empowered individuals who create positive societal change."
We envision a world where no young person's potential is limited by their circumstances. Every young person we mentor becomes a potential mentor themselves—creating ripples that reach their family, community, and future generations.
